National Public Health Week 2009
Building the Foundation for a Healthy America

From the water you drink, to the daycare your child attends, public health touches every aspect of your community. The Phelps / Maries County Health Department is dedicated to keeping the community a healthier place to live.

Did you know-?

  • Your local health department is helping to set the standards for public health in Missouri.
Some of our highlighted projects include:
  • We are one of the first local public health agencies to implement the new Missouri WIC Information Network System (MOWINS). WIC, the Women, Infants, and Children program is a nutrition program that helps pregnant women, new mothers and young children eat well and stay healthy. This system replaces the system that WIC has used for 15 years to process WIC information and issue vouchers.
  • We are now able to offer Tri-monthly WIC vouchers for eligible WIC clients. This means WIC appointments only every three months (four times per year).
  • We are a pilot agency for the new web-based communicable disease surveillance system known as WebSurv, this system is used to report and track communicable disease surveillance in Missouri. After the pilot period is complete all local public health agencies in Missouri will use the system for reporting communicable diseases.
  • Our environmental team has teamed up with MAP software to develop interactive digital software that allows our inspectors to conduct food establishment and lodging inspections and enter results into a small handheld tablet computer. The result has been increased productivity for the inspectors and a comprehensive typed inspection report that lists not only any current violations but directly references the applicable codes as well.
  •  Your local health department offers a variety of services and provided service to over 26,000 in 2008. These included:
