For Immediate Release: 11/14/06 Fresh Produce- Is it Really Good for Us? Recent outbreaks of E-coli and Salmonella associated with fresh produce products have understandably been cause for public concern. Fresh spinach, tomatoes, bagged lettuce and salads; are the things that are so good for us really safe to eat these days? The answer is yes; however, it is important to know what to look for when buying produce and how to safely store and prepare it once you take it home. Some common sense measures can help ensure that your produce will be safe as well as nutritious. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued advice for consumers aimed at reducing the risk of contracting a foodborne illness from fresh produce. Their release can be viewed at http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2006/NEW01503.html The web page also provides links to other valuable on-line resources related to food safety and outbreak information. ### |
