WHAT IS WIC?

WIC is a supplemental nutrition program for women, infant, and children (WIC). The program provides free food and nutrition information to improve the health status of the participant.

WIC is funded and administered at the national level by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. At the state level, the program is operated by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The Phelps County Health Department administers the program at the local level.

WHO IS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE?

WIC serves women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have had a baby less than 6 months ago, infants and children up to 5 years of age who are at nutritional risk and meet income guidelines.

Requirements for participation in the WIC program are the same for everyone regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or handicap.

WHAT ARE THE INCOME GUIDELINES?

Income guidelines are based on GROSS INCOME.

INCOME IS:

  • Wages, Salary, Tips, Fees. Commissions
  • Net Farm or Rental income or loss (after business expenses)
  • Net self-employed income or loss (examples: business, child care, Avon, etc.)
  • Total Military pay LESS cash housing allowance (BAQ)
  • Child Support and/or Alimony received
  • TANF, Social Security, SSI & other cash Public Assistant payments
  • Unemployment, Workman's Compensation, Strike benefits
  • Pension, Retirement, Veterans payments
  • Interest, Dividends
  • Prizes and other cash income
  • Cash withdrawn from Savings, Trust, etc.
  • Regular contributions from anyone - living in the home or not
  • Student Financial Aid less tuition fees, books and transportation

Income gudelines based on 185% poverty level.

NOTE: Those receiving Medicaid do not have to be below income guidelines but still must declare income at certification.
